  • Building bridges of understanding and empathy among church members is a challenge for pastors of multi-cultural congregations. This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. After an introduction explaining the rationale for the project, background information about St. Matthew is given. The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported. Explications of empathy and how these theories played out in the research are woven into the reporting of the research. The conclusion focuses on goals for the future.
