- Must religious exclusivity lead to religious or cultural triumphalism, and does it lead inevitably to hegemony? By examining Puritan and Indian relations in seventeenth century southern New England, this study demonstrates that Puritan theology fostered attitudes and a government policy destructive of Algonquin people in New England. The failure to develop a just policy toward Native Americans in turn brought Puritan theology into conflict with itself and hastened the collapse of Puritan rule. This study presents the Puritan theological methods used to foster a 'negative myth of the Indian' in New England.
