Abstrakt

This project studies the institution of the synagogue and its evolution throughout history. It provides an ideological critique of the four religious movements in American Jewry. The study presents a sociological view of the nature of synagogue affiliation and the motivations and influences of synagogue membership. It compares data on the American Jewry experience with affiliation data of other dominant religions represented in the United States. The majority of the project is dedicated to the needs assessment survey distributed to members of six synagogues in southern New Jersey. Church and synagogue affiliations each relfect the constancies and vagaries of religious group dynamics.
