This paper seeks to answer three questions: 1. What is the contemporary context for a local church in Scotland; 2. What is the purpose of the local church; 3. How can a local church adapt to fulfil its purpose in today’s context. Lesslie Newbigin’s writing on being a missional church, and Ronald Heifetz’s process for adaptive change are both used in this paper.
