  • During an eight week period in the fall of 1983, the writer led an ecumenical study group of eighteen persons representing six congregations in Berryville, Virginia. The group explored the baptism and eucharist sections of the Faith and Order document Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry, and provided feedback to the World Council of Churches. The denominations represented were: Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Progressive Baptist, Southern Baptist, and United Methodist. The project brings together some basic aspects of sacramental theology, the historical journeys of the various liturgical traditions represented in the group, and the convergence in sacramental thought that characterizes the present ecumenical community. It provides a model for doing theology ecumenically in a small town setting with both clergy and laity.
