Abstract
  • This project examines how biblical-theological, cultural, and other factors shape how members select leaders at Southside Christian Church (Ottawa, Illinois). A quantitative research method (written surveys and focus group interviews) was used for this study. It was determined that influences shaping members' ideas of leadership include scripture, Stone-Campbell principles and practices, workplace experiences, and American political structures. The extent of thee influences varied according to a member's age, gender, and length of association with the Stone-Campbell movement. In some instances, interaction between these factors resulted in members expressing conflicting attitudes about how they expected leaders to function in the church.
