- The purpose of this thesis is to suggest helpful criteria for preachers who view their listeners as co-creators of meaning during the sermon event. The underlying conviction of this thesis--that listeners are always co-creators of meaning along with the preacher in any sermon event--is based upon data collected during a three-year preaching project, and upon the work of a number of contemporary homileticians. The main thesis builds on the work of Fred Craddock who viewed the purpose of the sermon as 'getting something heard.' Going a step beyond Craddock's work, this thesis suggests that 'getting something created' is a helpful way of defining the purpose of preaching when listeners in the consciousness of homileticians is a central part of this thesis, which then leads to the conclusions of this thesis, that humility, imagination, and a 'catalytic consciousness' are essential qualities of preaching in the postmodern period.
