- Advances in medical technology in the past twenty-five years have brought many complex problems and questions concerning when it is ethically appropriate to withhold or withdraw life-sustaining treatment. The purpose of this study is to show that a consistent and systematic way to approach bioethical dilemmas has evolved in the last quarter century. The study approaches the discussion of limiting medical treatment from medical, legal, and theological perspectives. Specifically, bioethical dilemmas involving persons with developmental disabilities residing in a state residential facility in California are explored. The project portion of the study includes a handbook for use with families in considering options regarding limiting medical treatment. A pastoral section considers ways in which clergy may be more helpful in their pastoral care with the dying and their families.
