  • The study determines whether two small group models, a Covenant Bible Study and the John Wesley Great Experiment, could lead to renewal in a local congregation. Members of the congregation were involved in disciplined study and living for an eleven week period. The theological issues were: 1) the nature of the church as redemptive community; 2) Scripture as an authority for theology; 3) dangers of legalism moderated within a gospel of grace; 4) the quality of life within the small group; and 5) the difficulties of pluralism within a small group. The conclusions were: 1) The small group model was ineffective for church renewal but very effective in pastoral care; 2) The image of the pastor as chief teacher was reinforced; 3) The local church can allocate only a portion of its time and energy to small groups without seriously neglecting other important ministries; and 4) The local church needs more help in understanding the dynamics of human relationships.
