  • The author develops an argument linking blocked intimacy in men's relationships with other men to unresolved grief. A theoretical structure is described, identifying this grief as a response to men's early developmental experience of lack of a father figure with whom to identify. The author proposes that through a conscious grieving of the loss inherent in this early experience, men may have greater capacity to engage in relationship. The argument is developed through literature review, self-in-relation theory and attachment theory. Excerpts from interviews illustrate the author's thesis and a theological grounding is developed for the analysis and healing. Implications are identified for ministry in the clinical setting and in the local church, and for further study.
