  • The author undertook a disciplined pastoral assessment of the subject congregation to discover whether doing so would increase the congregation's sense that the parish's preaching ministry was connecting with the needs of its members. Based on the results of the assessment, a six-week expository sermon series was prepared and delivered. Quantitative and qualitative evaluative procedures indicated that the series, informed by insights from the pastoral assessment, did enhance the congregation's sense that the messages were connecting with them. The study also discovered that the sermons, guided by insights from the pastoral assessment, produced measurable cognitive and attitudinal changes in the listeners.
