  • Churches need to be intentional in the process of incorporating new members. Up to 80 percent of new members of a congregation leave within the first year. Participants from seven adult new memeber classes at St Peter's By the Sea Presbyterian Church (Rancho Palos Verdes, California) met monthly for six months in homes of the class members. The evenings were divided between basic Bible study and personal sharing. Addressing the intake needs of the newcomers and incorporating them so that they have meaningful relationships within the congregation resulted in better than an 80 percent retention over three years.
