- Southwest Tx Methodist Hospital in San Antonio lacked a clear-cut philosophical framework for its chaplaincy department. In this situation the following problems ensue: the hospital as an institution is not significantly involved in the role and function of its chaplaincy, and the staff chaplains are confused as to their purpose, philosophy, and procedures. In addition, other hospital employees, the departments in which they serve, and the physicians who practice are confused or not aware of the service of the chaplaincy. This inadequacy resulted in less effective patient care. The place of the chaplains as team members in the hospital, along with being companions with employees and doctors, was the desired end of the project. The project resulted in reducing or eliminating the problems, and, therefore, increased effective patient care. clarity was brought to the role of the chaplain, and lines of communication were opened with the hospital care-providing team, patients, and their families.
