  • The purpose of this dissertation was to produce a model for doing life review and teaching a Christian view of aging in a Presbyterian congregation. The research begins with an examination of nature of retirement in the church and society and how that has brought about the 'rise and fall' of the theory of disengagement. The remedy presented is for ministry with and for the aging to be grounded in the Christian view of aging. Aging is then examined in Christian perspectives, through an examination of aging in the Bible, Christian theological tradition, and contemporary society. Chapter 4 reports the act of ministry itself, a life-review process & ten class sessions to be used by a pastor to nurture & equip aging individuals & groups to remain engaged in the worship and work of the church. Chapter 5 is appraisal of the act based upon the responses of two persons who participated in the act of ministry, interpretation of data collected, & an appraisal in retrospect & prospect. The burden of this study is that something fundamental is lost or obscured if persons of all ages are not actively involved in the worship & work of the church.
