Abstrakt

Three infertile stepmothers were interviewed and verbatim transcripts of the interviews were analyzed in this preliminary qualitative study exploring the experience of infertile stepmothers. The results of the study indicate that in this sample, unresolved infertility negatively impacted parenting function. Two themes that emerged from the data were denial of the difference between being a biological mother and a stepmother, and anxiety over the stability of the family constellation. Implications for pastoral counseling include the importance of counselor awareness of cultural values related to fertility, identification of resolution as identity transformation, and use of pastoral resources to address life meaning issues.
