The study focuses on the leadership development of the local church board as a corporate body rather than as individual lay leaders. The research design employs a questionnaire to obtain indicators as to where the board was in its development and what leadership development needed to occur for improved effectiveness. The design includes a lay focus group for interpreting data and developing leadership development sessions. The study includes a historical overview of church leadership, devotionals to focus the board's attention at the beginning of each educational session, and six leadership development sessions to be presented in monthly board meetings. The study concludes that an emphasis on and participation in an ongoing strategy for leadership development for church boards will improve effectiveness.
