Abstrakt

There are some authors in the missional conversation who contend a church cannot be big and be missional. There are, however, others who assert that missional is a way of being the church and thus size is not the determining factor. Instead, they argue that organizational practices in conjunction with Spirit-directed leadership are the key factors that foster a missional culture. This hypothesis has not been verified in large churches. Therefore, the purpose of this project was to research the relevant literature and conduct qualitative research at four large self-described missional churches to determine what cultivates a missional culture in large churches. Cross-case analysis of the research data indicated that alignment of organizational practices with a biblical theology and the work of the Spirit are the key factors. This study provides both a foundation upon which others can build and assistance to large churches that endeavour to become missional.
