  • Afro-Americans have always existed in the social context of racism and oppression. The black church has been the main source for growth opportunities for black Americans, but the church has not been able to address all the needs of mind, body, and spirit. Ministry in the black church will have to be holistic in order to adequately deal with the multiple needs of black people. Growth-groups can assist black people to explore internal, debilitating conditions, and can help create changes in perceptual awareness. Increased self-understanding will help the Afro-American sub-culture to grow in the direction of personal, theological, and social wholeness.
