  • This paper promotes and tests the thesis that interim clergy who use research methods from cultural anthropology can learn and interpret congregational cultures in ways that will benefit new clergy and the congregations they serve. The paper includes a review of literature (ethnographic vocabulary and methods, pastoral practice and interim ministry), an ethnographic study of a congregation during an interim pastorate, a manual for the interim pastor who wishes to do congregational ethnography, and proposals for a diocesan/judicatory policy and program for interim ministry which would provide a framework within which interim clergy could contract to complete pastoral ethnographies.
