  • To carry out an effective pastoral ministry among women in South Africa the church must evaluate its position concerning polygamous marriages. This evaluation should come from knowledge of South African culture, the view of marriage presented by Scripture, and the experiences of women within polygamous marriages. The author's interviews with women reveal a great deal of pain and anger over being in such marriages. She also presents Scriptural arguments for monogamous as opposed to polygamous marriage forms, outlines various pastoral responsibilities and proposes courses of action for counseling women, men, and children in polygamous marriages.
