  • 'Why join the church?' The question is vexing for United Methodists who practice 'open communion' and who are open to high levels of church involvement from non-members. This project focuses on NC United Methodist's appropriation of Wesleyan ecclesiology to determine an appropriate response. Sermons from district superintendents and interviews with formerly unchurched United Methodists are utilized to clarify the Wesleyan answer to this perennial question. The answer points to a deeper understanding of preaching's power to shape a congregational ethos which in turn can lead to numerical and spiritual growth.
