Abstract
  • The thesis describes and evaluates a spiritual and educational program intended to encourage the growth of grassroots leadership in lay Franciscan communities within the Roman Catholic Church. The program was presented as two weekend retreats/workshops offered to lay Franciscans belonging to different regional communities. These weekends, presented by a team including both clergy and laity, sought to provide a spiritual framework for the participants, but also focused on encouraging leadership development through the sharing of experience, the modeling of leadership style, and the presentation of educational material. The training of the team and its participation in the retreats were themselves part of the project. The role of team ministry is an important feature of the project's evaluation.
