Abstrakt

The training of local church members in bereavement counseling was undertaken to meet the need of persons who needed ongoing support during a time of bereavement. The training program consisted of six sessions which made the counselors aware of the feelings of grief, and how they might effectively relate to persons in grief. After training, seven of the ten persons trained were willing to be assigned to bereaved persons whom they contacted on a regular basis. These contacts proved to be helpful to the bereaved persons over the six months to a year that they related to them. This program proved that lay persons can effectively minister to the needs of others with adequate training and support.
