  • The author argues that the primary challenge to contemporary preaching is spiritual, and examines the pattern of spiritual preparation for preaching in the ministries of four representative Puritan figures: William Perkins, Richard Baxter, Thomas Shepard and Cotton Mather. They show a remarkably consistent pattern of devotion in which meditation, self-examination, prayer and study figure prominently. Included are appendices on contemporary application and a study of Thomas Shepard's journal, for the first time correlating his entries to the day of the week of the entry.
