  • Consolidation and closure of former ethnic and national parishes has brought about one of the most extensive efforts at religious reorganization in U.S. history. Thirty-five interviews were conducted from participants in the 1989 consolidation in Chicago's Englewood and the San Francisco consolidation after its 1989 earthquake. The study explores the roles of ritual and pastoral care in highly conflicted situations using the praxis-theory-praxis method of practical theology and through the lens of trauma and reconciliation. A series of new rites are proposed: group reconciliation, atonement, lament, leave-taking, memorial and inauguration based on the experience of people most impacted by recent parish restructuring.
