- This study deals with some perspectives of marriage and divorce in the Bible, history and Africa south of the Sahara. The findings of this study are based on library research, listening and 20 years of the researcher's pastoral experience. The study concludes that marriage is a this-world human institution planned by God (Gen 2:18, Matt 22:30). It was planned for alleviation of loneliness, a fulfilling sexual intercourse, procreation, economic support and mutual responsibility for God's creation. Although monogamy is portrayed as the ideal, polygamy is validated as marriage. Divorce is permissible due to irretrievable marriage-breakdown.
