  • This project documents the chaplain's contribution to the holistic treatment of chronic pain. It gives a working definition of healthy spirituality. Four case studies address the significance of individual values, guilt, anger, and grief as they relate to anxiety and pain. The theological rationale for the project is based on Paul Tillich's threefold description of existential anxiety. The study indicates that chronic pain is more often the result of life history than medical history. It shows how the chaplain is uniquely equipped to minister to issues of personal meaning in life so that unresolved hurts will less often manifest themselves as chronic pain.
