Abstrakt

When conducted in a local church, biblical studies, informed by historical-criticism, contribute to a more enlightened understanding of the roles of women in the church. A volunteer group of persons from a local African-American church was tested, before a Bible study was taught, to determine existing attitudes toward leadership roles of women in the church and/or society. They were taught eight consecutive Bible lessons concerning female leadership patterns especially as depicted in the New Testament churches. Then, they were tested again to measure the change in attitude from pre-study to post-study. The results were then analyzed both by hand and by computer. The thesis was proven true, or verified. A majority of those whose attitudes changed from pre-study to post-study became more enlightened in their understanding of roles of women in the church.
