- This case study report of participant observation research conducted in Zaire to examine the problem of inadequately transmitted Christian and health messages, the discriminatory nature of exclusively literature-dependent methods of communication, and efforts that were made to use non-literature-dependent methods of communication describes how readers and non-readers in Zaire used oral communication methods such as storytelling, song/music, and drama to appropriately and effectively communicate health, evangelistic, and Christian maturation information. It was found that the use of story-based oral communication methods by critical bridges (literature-capable communicators) promoted the reception, processing, preservation, and transmission of information by readers and non-readers alike.
