Utilizing the discipline of theological reflection and informed by the constructs of emotional intelligence and Bowen family system theory, the participating ministers were provided a safe and challenging small group environment to assess and strengthen the intrapersonal and interpersonal skills/competencies necessary for effective self-management within a ministry context. The project, an intensive, 11-day small group experience conducted over nine months, was self-directed. Written case studies, coaching, videotaping, and peer and supervisor feedback were utilized. The growth in participants' self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management skills supported the project's presupposition that assessing and ultimately enhancing emotional intelligence competencies required a trusted community of peers, experienced ministry coaches, and a systemic understanding of emotional process.
